Pacific region

Generalities

  • It comprises 7.7% of the continental territory and 36.5% of the national maritime territory. The Departments included in this region are Nariño, Cauca, Valle del Cauca and Chocó. Some ecosystems are: tropical rainforest, estuaries, mangroves and coral reefs.
  • It is considered one of the areas with the highest biodiversity in the world. It is inhabited by indigenous and Afro communities, thus it is a territory with multiple territorialities as a result of human-nature interaction.
  • • It is made up of a system of alluvial plains interrupted by some small hills and by the important Baudó mountain range. The Atrato basin drains into the Atlantic Ocean, while the others flow into the Pacific Ocean. An east-west orientation predominates in the flow of most of rivers.
  • The Pacific region is considered among those with the highest rainfall on the planet averaging 4,000 mm / year.

Tips

  1. Recycling is important and prevents many plastics that we discard from reaching the seas, polluting and harming many organisms that reside there.
  2. Trees help reduce CO2 levels, after the Amazon, the Pacific forests are an important natural mechanism in the country to reduce the carbon footprint.
