Wetlands of Bogotá

Generalities

  • Wetlands are extremely important freshwater ecosystems within the national territory. Within the city we have several of them, remnants of the extensive lakes that were in the area, and they are strategic spaces that provide important ecosystem services for the community.
  • Some of the benefits received by wetlands are: they regulate water cycles and mitigate floods as well as the effects of climate change, they clean the air by fixing carbon, they are the habitat of an important variety of flora and fauna species, they provide spaces for enjoyment within the city.
  • In total we have 15 wetlands located within the urban area, of which we can mention: La Vaca, Tunjo, Córdoba, Torca-Guaymaral and Juan Amarillo.

Tips

  1. We invite you to visit the Museo de Historia Natural, in our facilities we have a recreation of one of these ecosystems so that you can identify some of the species that can be found in these capital habitats, such as: hawks, herons, owls and the elusive fox-dog. Part of the objective of the Museum is to achieve in our visitors the recognition of all these species and many more, which are not even that far from us, our homes and places of work.
  2. Keep these areas clean, as they are closed bodies of water, the flow of water is slow and garbage contributes to the generation of bad odors and the proliferation of pests.
  3. Pets without a leash in these places can be hunters of the wildlife that lives there. If you live near a wetland and find injured birds, collect them in a ventilated box or crate and call the environmental authorities so that they give the proper rescue treatment.
