Amazon region

Generalities

  • The Colombian Amazon region comprises 41.7% of the national continental territory. This region covers the departments of Amazonas, Putumayo, Vaupés, Guainía, Guaviare, Meta, Vichada, Caquetá, Nariño and Cauca.
  • Due to its location in the equatorial zone, it has a warm climate with an essentially unimodal rainfall regime and an average rainfall of 3,307 mm.
  • It belongs to two of the largest basins in the world, those of the Amazon and Orinoco rivers, drained by many rivers that originate in the Andes mountain range and generally flow in a west-east direction.
  • In terms of biodiversity this region is very rich. For example, in terms of flora, more than 6,200 species of vascular plants have been fully identified and for fauna 1,992 of vertebrates have been reported.
  • Among the ecosystems that we have in the Colombian Amazon region, we can name: humid jungle, rivers, swamps, basal forests, riparian forests and wooded savannahs.

Tips

  1. The illegal trade of species is a threat to the Amazon fauna, remember that these animals should live in the jungles, not in your home.
  2. Buy local products from the Amazon rainforest such as Azai and Copoazú, this promotes the preservation of forests and prevents deforestation.
  3. During the construction of houses or when acquiring furniture, prefer those that use cultivated woods. Usually it is very prestigeous to say that the table or the furniture is made of cedar, but at what environmental cost? There are very good alternatives available in cultivated woods and when we buy them we also help reduce carbon emissions.
